The best way to start an amaryllis seed from my experience is to place the seeds in a bowl of water. It may take a while but the seeds that are viable will sprout. I do not put the seeds in any type of seed starting mix until the seeds have a leaf that you can clearly see is a leaf. It will be green and it will look like a small blade of grass to begin with.
